The Nanny Diaries

Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus

Fiction

I really really enjoyed this book, a first for both authors. It is the story of a 21 year old college student at NYU who pays her rent and tuition by being the nanny of upper class Manhattan folk. Nanny, which is her name throughout the whole book, is definitely no Mary Poppins as there is swearing throughout the book. The story is absolutely hilarious as we see how the upper class lives and seemingly does not take care of their children. When Nanny gets involved in trying to keep the sanity of her charge while his parents are breaking up, the plot heats up. Not only does she have to basically be the manservant of Mrs. X (they are referred to as the Xes) but shes also asked by the mistress to be the errand girl. I could not get enough of the insane demands of Mrs. X and the results on poor Nanny.
